Its not piracy, its number exchange

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

It is impossible to copyright a sequence of numbers, even in hexadecimal, as so vehemently emphasised by Digg’s readership today. What implication then, for our digital information? (more…)

Atheism

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Recently I’ve been doing that most pointless of things - arguing on the internet. It is a fault of mine that I cannot abide sitting idly by while someone lies or misinforms. And so, I entered one particularly long debate on everything from Yahwehs existence to evolution. I even had to sit through some ridiculous Youtube videos of muslim clerics asking “if monkeys turned into humans, why are there still monkeys?” This type of foggy, ignorant thinking abhors me enough to continue an argument. Finally, after monotonously explaining all of these laws, processes and theories, we came to the point where the Creationist had become a Pantheist - believing in nothing specific, but rather in some all powerful force. This is the denouement of that argument. (more…)

Featured Web Project: UCCDating.com

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

I’ve been working away on UCCDating.com since September 2006, creating a software application called AcademicAmore. The pitch goes like this:

  • AcademicAmore is a tool to create a social networking community, similar to (and in some areas, more feature-rich than) MySpace, Bebo or Facebook. The differentiating factor is that it is designed to be used in a locality - re-introducing the real-world factors of social interaction.
  • The real-world angle of the project is controlled by a fully customisable interface, a wiki-style guide to interests and places in the locality of the community, and an events calendar provided to enable users to meet-up at an event that interests them. All of this can be tied in with a Google map to give a visual guide to who and what is going on in the community.
  • Users can create their own avatar, similar to WeeMees or SecondLife.

Hey You, Buy Aerofoam Metal Stock!

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

I’d just like to clarify that I have no conection with the people who have been using my email address to send out ’spam’ emails asking you to buy AFML stock.

It is extremely easy to fake the “from” field in an email - essentially anyone with a bit of programming knowledge can send an email from anyone, to anyone. It is a flaw in the concept of email, and is at this late stage highly unlikely to ever change.

The spammers like to pretend that they are from a reputable website, so they send emails from addresses like ijif@GavinGolden.com.

The company in the email, Aerofoam Metals, have released a statement that they are trying to get the spammers to stop. What may ultimately stop the spammers is that the stock market have stopped taking trades on AFML, making it pointless to send the email.

Featured Web Project: SpeakOut.biz

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Site: SpeakOut.biz
Owned By: Gavin Golden and Courtenay Cameron
Wikipedia?: Read More

SpeakOut began as a temporary solution to a friend’s problem: her online community had just lost its website, rendering it homeless. Myself and Courtenay teamed up and developed “Speak Out - Be Heard!” with vBulletin, CSS, and a whole lot of hard work. Today the community is still pretty small, with 400 or so members.

Photography

Friday, September 15th, 2006

I’ve been playing around with Google’s Picasa Web Albums and uploading some stuff. I’ve embedded a few of the albums into the photography section of my site, which is great except for one thing, one of the albums isnt obeying chronological order (The New York one, which is exceedingly old - one of the photos is in the World Trade Centre). Oh well.

I like playing around with my digital camera, I wouldn’t call it a full-blown hobby but its certainly something I do for fun in my spare time. Err…

I hate the first post in a blog. You’re always talking to yourself… but publicly, so that people can look back and use it as evidence against you in a court of law. So I’m going to stop now.

Obligatory SpeakOut.biz mention <3
